Now available at Walt Disney World Resort are these beautiful Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, inspired ears! These beautiful ears are decorated with traditional Cempasúchil flowers used in Día de los Muertos.
What is Día de los Muertos?
Día de los Muertos is a 3 day event where family and friends gather together to celebrate and remember their loved ones who have passed on. This event is celebrated by many across Mexico. Celebrations begin on October 31 and end on November 2. It is believed that the spirits of the dead ancestors return and visit the world of the living.
Traditionally, family and friends make altars at their loved ones’ graves and place ofrendas (offerings) for the deceased. A photo of the departed is placed on the altar. Ofrendas include foods, candles, and cempasúchil (marigold flowers). It is also common to build and decorate an altar at home with ofrendas, photos of the deceased, and items the person loved.
In 2017, Disney-Pixar released the highly celebrated animated film, Coco. The film takes place during Día de los Muertos celebrations in Mexico. The main character, Miguel, crosses to the Land of the Dead and has to rely on the help of the deceased to help him return to the land of the living.
